The hardcover work offers a wonderful tale that is presented in high quality paper, with wonderful pictures and with the ability to select a second, third, and fourth language (i.e. Spanish, Chinese, Russian). Of course you can also just select one or two languages alone! The books is layout out in English and sticker pages are provided to adapt the other language(s). What I love about it is that as a parent or teacher we can prioritize the child’s native language in the actual book rather than other bilingual books which always have the child’s native language under English! More than a delightful children’s book — a rendition of a Russian folk tale — Kolobok’s hard cover edition tells the story of a little bun who comes to life in four languages.

The book is, as far as we know, the first of its kind — a wonderful addition to any child’s or early childhood educator’s library, and a tool for those who work with English Language Learners.

What a delightful tale Ms. Bochkov has written for multi-lingual children. This Russian "Gingerbread Man" story appeals not only to young children with its vivid and multi-media illustrations, but also parents and educators, as it is available in four separate languages. The sticker concept is unique - use the same story in one language and the next day reread the same story in a separate language with peel off and on stickers - and has never before been available in such an easy to use format. Parents also have the option of purchasing the same story as a paperback retold with its natural translations.

Having the same story in two different languages can only help students generate complex vocabulary and listening skills necessary when entering the classroom. The English version can be read by one person and the Second Language version can be read by another adult who is more comfortable in their home language. The story itself is easy to follow and maintains the natural rhythms unique in all four languages and provides many opportunities for authentic dialogue with children whether its don't speak with strangers or what rhymes with "run". The educational advantages are unique and the storytelling itself is great for a bedtime story certain to be a family favorite.

"Kolobok" by Natasha Bochkov is the perfect tool for teaching a second language to a child, whether it be English, Spanish, Russian, or Mandarin.

The repetitiveness of the "song" in the story aids in learning the vocabulary quickly. The story is engaging and amusing. The illustrations, with their mix of drawings and actual photographs, are captivating. Kids will ask for it to be read again and again in any language!

As an ELL Early Childhood and Elementary educator, I am always looking for good quality books that relate to my overarching theme of "We are all alike; we are all different", so that I can instill in my students an appreciation and respect for everyone's cultures. This book will be perfect to add to my bibliography.

Using the universal story of "The Gingerbread Man", I could ask my Kindergarten/First Graders to compare and contrast this beautiful Russian tale to different one from around the world. We could get into a conversation too about fiction vs. non-fiction, while observing the clever use of photography and illustrations. The repetitive poem is easy to memorize, promoting language learning for my youngest students. "Run, run, as fast as you can!" You have to catch this "Kolobok"!

Наверное, рецензия такой длины на «Колобок» - детскую книжку в десяток страниц - выглядит смешно, но это издание действительно заслуживает обстоятельного разговора.

Эта книжка вышла сразу на четырех языках: русском, английском, испанском и китайском, в совершенно идентичном оформлении. Идея одновременного издания детских книг в переводе на несколько языков не нова, вспомним хотя бы «билингвы». Автор этого оригинального проекта, Наташа Бочкова, - успешный график и вэб-дизайнер, мама двух сыновей – хорошо знакома с проблемами воспитания детей в условиях двуязычия и идет от своего собственного опыта. Конечно, детских книг на русском языке в зарубежье катастрофически не хватает, но выход из этой ситуации все же находится: зачитанные до дыр любимые книжки передаются из рук в руки. Сложнее, когда ребенок не понимает в полном объеме то, что ему читают, тогда родителям приходится на ходу адаптировать текст, чтобы удержать внимание ребенка. Именно это и сделала с «Колобком» Наташа. Во-первых, двуязычному малышу так легче, а, во-вторых, это облегчает и перевод сказки на другие языки.

Не могу судить о китайском и испанском вариантах, но на русский «Колобок» пересказан современным русским языком, и даже его песенка вполне узнаваема. Читать такую книгу легко - если вам, конечно, не мешает отсутствие с детства засевших в голове строчек «катится колобок, катится...» или «а от тебя и подавно убегу». В новой версии «Колобка» вы их не найдете, так же, как и сусеков и амбаров, которые ничего не говорят ребенку, выросшему где-нибудь в пригородах Бостона (как, впрочем, и современному московскому ребенку). А английский вариант получился даже более «фольклорным», потому что переводчик не удержался и добавил от себя звукоподражания, неизменные в англоязычных сказках для самых маленьких.

Под стать языку и иллюстрации: никаких ухватов или лаптей - современные состоятельные пенсионеры живут в скромном среднеевропейском коттетже. Книга также привлекает к себе своим дизайном: необыкновенное сочетание компьтерной графики и фотографии.

Замечательная идея использовать наклейки с текстом позволяет по желанию сделать книжку на любом из четырех языков, а те, кто уже умеет читать, могут попробовать найти, к какой картинке относится текст.

Этот проект получил поддержку не только у учителей русского, но и у преподавателей других языков в условиях двуязычия. А проект поистине масштабный: то, что мы видим - (книга в твердом переплете на четырех языках, с диском и наклейками, и отдельно изданные книжки в мягкой обложке) – это только начало. За ним последуют и другие русские народные сказки.
